Oral health can directly impact your gut health and vice versa. Some of the first signs of digestive disease may, in fact, show themselves in the mouth. Some oral signs include: ⁣

Autoimmune diseases. While the response begins in the digestive system, conditions can present themselves in the mouth. How do these diseases originate? Oftentimes by changes in the gut microbiome, or the population of bacteria that live within the gastrointestinal tract. ⁣

For those with type 2 diabetes, who have a higher risk of gum disease because of a reduced healing ability in your mouth, you might find bleeding and inflamed gums. Likewise, obesity, linked to inflammation, seems to worsen gum disease. This is due to a typical type of gut microbes that relate to obesity. ⁣

So, if you’re looking to improve your gut health or to ensure you have a healthy digestive system, make sure you look in your mouth first.

Who doesn't like chocolate? And I'm telling you it’s good for you! 🍫 This dark chocolate pomegranate bark does not disappoint in the health or taste department!

Directions:
🍫 Melt two 70% dark chocolate bars (in a double boiler or microwave at 50% power in 30-60 second intervals)
🍫 Place melted chocolate on parchment paper on a cookie sheet about 1/4 inch thick
✨ Add 1 cup pomegranate seeds
✨ Add 1/2 cup shelled pistachios
✨ Add 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut
✨ Spread it all out so it’s super pretty
✨ Place in fridge or freezer for about 30 minutes
✨ When hardened, break apart and get ready for your taste buds to be wowed!

So you can actually boost your tryptophan levels by eating more carbohydrates; they seem to help eliminate the competition for tryptophan, so more of it can enter the brain. But it's important to make smart carbohydrate choices like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, which also contribute important nutrients and fiber. ⁣
